As a child growing up in Beaumont, Texas, Hornbuckle’s evident artistic ability had emerged by second grade.  At her art teacher's insistence she keep a scrapbook, she collected Time Magazine’s 2” x 2” reproductions of paintings by Miro, Jackson Pollock, Hans Hoffman, de Kooning, Josef Albers, and other abstractionists reviewed frequently in the 50’s. Though unfathomable to a ten-year-old, they came to represent artists, art, and the “art life”. That memory drew her ultimately to abstraction.
